Necessary Abilities For A Successful Tennis Player

Necessary Abilities For A Successful Tennis Player

Tennis is a sport that requires having lots of skills and techniques, so in order for a tennis player to develop his skills, certain technical, mental and physical abilities of a player are necessary. Some of the skills that a tennis player needs to have is a stroke production, strategy, mental toughness, and physical athleticism.

Every beginner should have plenty of knowledge concerning advanced technical skills such as net play, net charge, making contact, slice, drop shots, swing and many others.  The forehand stroke is considered as the most natural stroke in tennis, so it should be a number one technique to learn. In case you are right-handed player, and your opponent returns a ball directly towards your body, your tendency will be to step to your left and hit the ball from the right side of your body. On the other hand, if you are a left-handed player, and your opponent returns a point directly towards your body, you will naturally step to your right side and hit the ball from the left side of your body.

It is necessary to learn the tennis serve, since it is a beginning of a tennis game. The player who serves is called the server and the player on the other end is the receiver. There are several types of serves such as topspin, topspin-slice, flat, slice, kick and many others. A perfect serve is achieved by executing the right stance, the right tennis serve grip and the correct ball toss. It is necessary to learn to execute the proper body movement.

Tennis Lob is an important shot, necessary for every player to learn. It can be offensive or defensive shot. It is executed by hitting the ball high and deep into your opponent’s court, so offensive lob shot is hit when the opponent is at the net, while the defensive lob shot is used to force the opponent back and allow you to recover to a better defensive position. A tennis overhead is a shot hit above the player’s head just like the serve execution. It is also known as a smash shot and if you perform it correctly you can win a point. Sometimes, a poorly executed lob shot can be returned as an overhead shot by the opponent. To give more power to an overhead shot, hit it before it bounces on the ground. A lob shot is another addition to the player’s tennis skills and techniques that ensures a point.

Since tennis consists of many demanding moves, you need speed, agility, endurance, and flexibility in order to reach the skill level that you wish. You cannot be slow and achieve good results, so your muscles and tendons needs to be flexible for you to be able to hit balls that seem unreachable. In addition, you need to be able to endure, so you can spend long hours on the court. Every tennis player must be able to achieve balance and maintain it during the match. Good balance also minimizes injuries especially in the lower part of the body such as the legs, ankles and knees. Exercises and drills to improve balance can be done both on court and off-court. In order to be able to keep track of the ball on the court, you need to have a good hand-eye coordination. This is important in order to be able to react quickly and respond with the right moves.

As you can see, it is not quite easy to learn to play tennis, so in order to be able to improve your skills, you need to be highly motivated. Otherwise, you won’t be ready to dedicate enough time and energy to developing your skills. Concentration and focus play a vital role in every tennis player’s performance. To have focus while you are on court means you have to eliminate all the other thoughts especially the negative ones that can distract you. A player must focus not to miss second serve to avoid double faults. Tennis is a tough game particularly for tennis singles, so it may be difficult at times. It is important not to give up until the end of the match and try different tactics in order to defeat the opponent.
